Maverick follows the trials and tribulations of Bret Maverick (Mel Gibson) as he tries to make it to the big poker tournament. Since he does not have the required entry fee to enter the tournament he is forced to try and collect some debts from his friends and find anyway possible to make the needed money for his buy in. Along the way he runs into a Marshall, Zane Cooper (James Garner) who “helps” him in a couple tough situations. This help is further “aided” by Miss Annabelle Bransford (Jodie Foster), a southern belle that is also looking to make it to the big tournament and in need of money to play. The three set off in an escapade through gun battles and Indian’s in order to make it to the ship and play against some of the bad guys that were chasing them the whole way there.
