In a quiet and well-to-do Massachusetts town Sarah Pierce (Kate Winslet) is a grad student whose husband Richard (Gregg Edelman) ignores her in favor of his Internet porn addiction. Brad Adamson (Patrick Wilson) is the Prom King handsome stay-at-home dad married to wealthy documentary film maker Kathy (Jennifer Connelly). Mary Ann (Mary B. McCann) is the gossipy and controlling leader of the playground moms. These adults in upscale suburbia come together at the park each summer day ostensibly to watch their children play but in reality they have never grown up themselves. Sarah begins by defying Mary Ann’s rigid playtime rules and then approaches the handsome Brad at the playground. They start the gossip mill going by pretending there is something between them. They even exchange a passionate kiss. However, the fake kiss eventually turns to real lust that raises a long series of internal debates as they both attempt to cope with marriages that aren’t working. In the meantime, child molester Ronnie J. McGorvey (Jackie Earle Haley) returns to town after his stint in prison and enrages the playground clique especially ex-cop Larry Hedges (Larry (Noah Emmerich).
