A story of racial and class division is set off by a carjacking turned kidnapping. A black detective, Lorenzo Council (Samuel Jackson), attempts to uncover the truth buried in victim Brenda Martins (Julianne Moore) story, who is white. Dazed and bleeding in an inner city ER, Brenda says that a black man assaulted her and stole her car with her 4 year old sleeping in the back seat. Set in fictional New Jersey towns, the racial and class elements between two towns, one low income predominantly black and one upper class white, become intensified by the incident. Complicating matters, Brenda’s brother is a detective in the upper-class area and interferes with Councils investigation. The racial and class tensions are front and center in this film and provide the backdrop for the unlikely friendship that develops between Council and Martin.
